How to install a two handle faucet

While bathroom faucets do not have to be mundane, they do need to be installed correctly. Many faucet manufacturers have taken the challenge out of the installation process of two handled faucets.

Some faucet designs use a rubber gasket to seal the joint between the base of the faucet and the sink while others require plumber's putty being placed around the perimeter of the faucet’s base. These new designs can make the installation process much more simple for the homeowner.

You will need the following tools to install a two handle faucet:
1. A groove joint pliers
2. Plumbers putty
3. A screwdriver

You will find a wide variety of two handled faucets available to you. Many install in basically the same manner, but be sure to follow the instructions specific to your particular fixture. Instructions are included with the product. Instructions will basically involve the following:

Unpack the faucet and check it.

Follow the manufacturer’s direction and install the gasket or apply the plumber’s putty. Many faucets designs have a rubber gasket that goes between the base of the valve and spout assembly and the top of your sink. Others require applying plumber’s putty to the bottom of the fixture.

Place your fixture o the sink or countertop. If the spout has riser tubes already installed, align them with the hole in the sink and lower the spout body into place. Place the appropriate faucet valve assemblies (hot or cold) into the holes in the countertop. If these valves have risers tubes already installed, be sure to thread the through the holes in your countertop. Reach under the sink and tighten the hold down bolts. Some models have larger washers and nuts that screw on the valve tailpieces. Others are held in place by brackets that bolt to the underside of the valve body.

Reach under the sink and connect the flexible hoses from the hot and cold valves to the spout. Connect the riser tubes from the hot and cold valves to the stop valves on the wall.

You must now turn on the water to check for leaks.

Be sure to remove the aerator screen from the spout and run water through the faucet to flush out the debris that may be in the pipes.

When the water begins to run clear, you can replace the aerator.

Two types of valves can be used. A right angle stop valve can be used when a water pipe enters through a wall. A straight stop valve will be used when water enters through the floor. Before purchasing a valve, be sure to check to see what type of water pipes you have and what style of valve you need to replace. Water pipes can be made of plastic, copper or galvanized material.

To change a valve, you will need the following basis plumbing tools: a wrench, an adjustable pipe wrench and a bucket.
