How to service a compression faucet

First, turn off the water supply and open the faucet handle to relieve pressure.

You will next need to carefully pry the trim cap off using a small screwdriver of putty knife.

Next, you will need to remove the locknut with an adjustable wrench. Now lift the spindle out of the faucet.

You may need to remove and replace the O-ring. Before you reinstall the O-ring, coat the stem lightly with plumber’s grease.

If you need to, remove the retaining screw and pry out the washer. You will need to install an exact-replacement washer and then tighten it.

Be sure to inspect the seat and replace it if it is damaged.

Finally, install a new valve and tighten it. Reinstall the handle and test the faucet.
